History of Melville House Bed and Breakfast Lismore

In Helen Opie’s words –

“The home that has become Melville House Bed & Breakfast was built in 1942 by local Lismore builder Alex Roberts. It was built for my grandparents who commissioned it. They were my mother’s parents. My memory is that my grandparents had planned to build it for my mother but she died in 1952. So after Mum died, my grandparents moved in to the house and raised me and my brother in the house – at that time we were 3 months old and 2 and one half years old respectively. My mother was an only child.

My grandparents had a dress fabric store in Molesworth Street in Lismore which they ran as a business til the late 1970s. Melville House has remained a private house since it was built. I rented it to the Anglican Church for about 5 years before coming back to Lismore from Sydney. I decided to set up the house as a Bed & breakfast around 1994, so Melville House B&B has been in operation now for 25 years. In keeping with the Art Deco style- we have added, renovated and restored as needed. You see the origins of the 1940’s style in the bedrooms, the fixtures, the art and furnishings. People really love the place and we have many many people who call Melville House home when they visit Lismore either professionally or for holidays and events.”
